Sugar-Free and Sober in October

How was your summer? If it was anything like mine, you had a very good time. Vacations, extended weekends down the shore or at the lake, picnics, BBQs, and the like. Summer is always a very indulgent time for me. I eat more, I drink more, and I spend more. Even though I keep moving with outdoor activities, it’s not enough to counteract the onslaught of calories I consume compared to other seasons. I know it and I’ve come to accept that about summer. "Work hard-Play hard", and in the summer, I play hard. I’m not going to stress about it enjoying these few months. It’s a tradeoff and you can’t beat yourself up for something you willingly participate in, right? This may be true, but I also know that life and health come down to deposits and withdrawals.
I make a lot more withdrawals in the summer months than other months during the year. It’s like Thanksgiving Day or Christmas week, I know I’m going to eat, drink and be merry. However, if you make more withdrawals than deposits ALL the time, you overdraw your bank account or in this case your “health account”. When you have a severe negative balance in your health account, you are at a much higher risk for a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, or obesity-related conditions. It’s that simple, make more deposits than withdrawals over time.
This is why I do 2 detox programs every year, one after the Christmas holidays in January and one after the summer. A friend of mine asked me the other day, “Dane, would you like to join me in Sober October”? I said, “I love it”! I love the name, I love the accountability and I love the opportunity to get disciplined and back in fighting shape again.
So, to that end, you are ALL invited to join us. I’ve added cutting out refined carbs (sugars) as well as this is something that I always do when I’m doing my post-summer detox. So, it’s simple, no refined carbs (ANYTHING with flour, sugar, or sweeteners) and no alcohol for 21 days starting October 4th and running through October 24th.
See the rules attached and we will have a program manual for anyone that signs up. I’m going to do a virtual (Zoom) meeting the week before we get started to go over everything so look out for that. It will be recorded if you can’t make the live meeting. If you are close to my office and want to do the program, I recommend doing an InBody scan the week before starting to check your weight, body fat mass, visceral fat mass (belly fat). We will also measure your waist circumference. We will check it again when we finish the 21-days. You will be amazed at the weight you lose and the fat you lose in inches around your waist. Also, remember that the effects of detoxing go way beyond weight loss. Your mental clarity will be better, you will have better energy, sleep better, give your organs a break, and experience lots of other health benefits as well.
