The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation and Cancer Risk

If you’re like most people, your cell phone is like something you can’t live without anymore. We say that we could but a recent study by Motorola shows that if our house were burning down, we would grab our cell phones before we grab the cat! Our cell phones have become an important part of our lives because they do so much. However, do cell phones cause us harm and do they cause cancer?

Cell phone radiation exposure has been principally linked to two types of brain tumors − gliomas and acoustic neuromas. Gliomas are a type of tumor that starts in the brain or spine are typically malignant and they are particularly deadly. Most people survive only 1 to 3 years after diagnosis of this kind of tumor. Acoustic Neuromas though non-malignant (low-grade cancer), are in many cases life threatening given that they are an intracranial (within the skull) tumor. The Interphone Study is the granddaddy of all the study findings into cell phone radiation and the safety of cellphones for humans. At a cost of $25 million, this is the largest study of cell phone use and tumor risk conducted to date. It found that “regular use of a cell phone by adults can significantly increase the risk of gliomas by 40% with 1640 hours or more of use.” This equates to about 30 minutes per day over ten years. There are now many studies which link cell phone radiation exposures with gliomas and acoustic neuromas. The Hardell Research Group in Sweden are widely regarded as producing some of the highest quality studies on this question. They have found “a consistent pattern of increased risk for glioma and acoustic neuroma associated with use of wireless phones.”

There are now many studies that show that cell phone radiation damages DNA. There have been hundreds of studies that show that cell phone radiation can damage the DNA material in your cells.

Particularly of concern for us is the people that wear Bluetooth headsets in their ears for long periods of time, instead of a corded headset. Bluetooth radiation emitted from all Bluetooth Headsets and Technologies is a type of wireless radio wave frequency (RF) also known as microwave radiation.

People need to realize that Bluetooth devices that fit in or around the ear typically radiate at 0.23 watts per kilogram (W/Kg). Some Bluetooth devices are worse than some of the lowest SAR cell phones.

This level of 0.23 W/Kg is 10 to 100 times higher than the RF exposure levels shown to make the blood-brain barrier pathologically leaky, allowing toxins and toxic molecules to cross the BBB. This is reported by Salford, Persson, NIttby and Schirmacher among others – to cause neuron death at 0.012 to 0.002 W/Kg.
