When your faith and philosophy get rocked to their core.

November was a hell of a month for me personally and for my faith in what I believe. About 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, I went to a 50th birthday party down in Northeast Philly. It was at a small Irish bar, and it was packed with people. Great Irish band, great fun and I really didn’t think about being around all those people because I’ve gone this last few years without even a sniffle. Well, that Monday evening after the party my joints started aching, by the next morning I had chills, fatigue, more body aches, and a low-grade fever. I went and got tested right away and the test came back positive for Covid. I thought OK, time to let my underlying foundation of good health and strong immune system do their job. I was down and out for about a week, and I quarantined for 10 days so I wouldn’t expose anyone else. I was better by Thanksgiving and even though my taste and smell are just coming back now, my experience was that of a bad cold or flu. By the way, my wife had Covid in May of 2020, over a year and a half ago. She neither tested positive nor got any symptoms from me even though she was around me the whole time I had Covid. The moral of the story is that natural immunity works and I’m glad I have it now.

What has really rocked me to the core is during the time I had Covid, 2 Chiropractors that I know well also got Covid. One was my mentor and one of the reasons I became a Chiropractor, my uncle Jay Komarek. He is my mom’s brother and an amazing man. He got Covid and had to be hospitalized where he is still recovering because of the severity of his infection. It was “touch and go” for a while but it looks like he is moving in the right direction.

Also during this time, a friend of mine, who I’ve known for a long time and was a healthy man, also got Covid. His infection was so bad that he eventually had to be put on a ventilator. I’m very sad to report that he passed away this week. Dr. Al Latronica was a great Chiropractor and a great family man. It’s shocking and my heart goes out to his wife Pam and their children and grandchildren. When someone who is young (early 60’s) and seems very healthy dies, it rattles your foundation of what health is. I asked myself “why was my experience so different than my Uncle Jay and my friend Al’s experience?”. Obviously, I can’t answer that question, but I believe my lifestyle is a huge part of my strong natural immunity. I do think luck factors in, and I got lucky, but I also believe strongly

that luck favors preparation. My body was prepared to fight Covid and win.

Getting immunity requires RISKS, you either risk getting the disease or risk getting the vaccine. Your choice and you must deliberate as to which one you feel is the better choice for YOU. This is still America, and you still have the right to make the choice that is best for you. However, make no mistake about it, either choice has its risks.

I ask that you pray for my uncle Jay and pray for Pam Latronica, Al’s wife, and their family. Covid is a real enemy and shouldn’t be taken lightly. When your faith gets rocked, you naturally question your beliefs. However, I strongly believe that natural immunity and listening to what your body tells you to do are the way to protect yourself from this powerful enemy.

Yours in good health,

Dr. Dane Donohue
